Auto Accident Related Headaches & Migraines

Headaches and migraines are a common complaint after an automobile accident, they can be caused by several sources. Often times, people who had chronic headaches and migraines notice the headaches become more frequent and/or more painful. Other people may not get a headache for a few hours, days, possibly even up to and after the accident. If you begin to experience headaches or migraines after an auto accident you should visit an Overland Park chiropractor for treatment.

Causes of Headaches and Migraines After an Auto Accident

Whiplash - A common injury sustained in an auto accident, which is caused by an abrupt force that causes the head and neck to move violently in a jerking motion either forward or backward, causing the muscles and soft tissue to become strained. Whiplash headaches and migraines usually are felt near the base of your skull, neck pain, dizziness, and fatigue can often accompany the pain. It is not uncommon for this type of headache/migraine to appear for days or even weeks after the auto accident.

Post-Traumatic Headache & Migraine - This is generally caused by trauma to the neck and head during the auto accident. This type of injury can also be caused by a concussion (originating in the brain). Other causes can include – muscle spasms, contractions, and pinched nerves in the uppermost portion of the neck. These headaches/migraines may take a few weeks to appear.

Post-Concussion Headache (Migraines) - A concussion is a brain injury, in an auto accident it is caused by either a sudden violent movement, being hit in the head by debris or hitting the head on something. Other common symptoms can include nausea, vomiting sensitivity to light and sound, ringing in the ears to mention a few.

Fracture Headache – If the skull is fractured during an auto accident the person will likely experience painful headaches near the injury site. Other symptoms can include severe neck pain, confusion, nausea and slurred speech.
